Queer Person in History: Robert Jeffrey Dover


Robert Jeffrey Dover (born June 7, 1956) is an American equestrian. Riding from the age of 13, he began specializing in dressage at age 19 and competed in his first Olympics in 1984.


He competed in every summer Games between 1984 and 2004, winning four team bronze medals. He also took a team bronze at the 1994 World Equestrian Games.


At the 1988 at the Olympics in Seoul, he became the first openly gay Olympic athlete to compete.


The 2020 Summer Olympics, delayed by COVID were held in summer 2021. The Tokyo Olympics had at least 185 publicly out LGBTQ athletes, a record number with more out athletes than all of the past Summer and Winter Olympics combined.
